Reddit threads have a way of surfacing at exactly the wrong moment. A years-old complaint, a heated comment section, or a post naming you or your business can climb Google’s results and sit there for anyone who searches your name. Reddit’s size and authority mean these threads often outrank the pages you’d actually want people to see.
The good news: depending on the situation, you have several ways to get a Reddit post out of your search results. This guide covers each one — from the quick fixes to the routes that take real work — and is honest about what each can and can’t achieve.
Why Reddit ranks so well in Google
Reddit is one of the most-visited websites in the world, and Google treats it as a high-authority source. Threads are keyword-rich, frequently updated by new comments, and heavily linked to. That combination means a single post about you can rank on the first page even when the underlying discussion is small or old. It also means simply waiting it out rarely works — active threads can hold their ranking for years.
Removing your own post vs. someone else’s
The right approach depends entirely on who created the content.
If you posted it
This is the easy case. You can delete your own Reddit post or comment at any time from your account. Deleting removes the content from Reddit, and the URL will typically drop out of Google’s index once Google recrawls the now-empty page. If you want to speed that along after deleting, you can request removal of the outdated page through Google’s Refresh Outdated Content tool, which is available to anyone for pages that no longer show the original content.
If someone else posted it
You can’t delete another user’s post directly — and this is where most people get stuck. Your options fall into three buckets: getting a moderator or Reddit itself to remove it for a rules violation, pursuing a legal route if it’s unlawful, or suppressing it if it’s simply unflattering. We’ll take those in turn.
Reporting to moderators and Reddit admins
Every subreddit is run by volunteer moderators and governed by both that subreddit’s rules and Reddit’s sitewide Content Policy. A post that breaks either can be removed — so the first step is to identify a genuine violation rather than simply arguing that the post is unfair.
- Contact the subreddit moderators. If the post breaks a specific subreddit rule, message the mod team and point to the exact rule. Calm, specific, evidence-based messages land far better than demands.
- Report sitewide violations to Reddit. Reddit’s Content Policy prohibits things like harassment, sharing someone’s private personal information (doxxing), non-consensual intimate imagery, and threats. Posts that cross those lines can be reported directly to Reddit through its help and reporting forms, and can be removed by admins regardless of what a subreddit’s mods decide.
- Personal information removal. Reddit has a dedicated process for requesting removal of posts that expose your private information. If a thread includes your home address, phone number, financial details, or similar, this is often the most direct path.
When a moderator or admin removes the post, the page stops showing the content, and it will generally fall out of Google over time as the page is recrawled.
Legal routes for defamation or unlawful content
If a Reddit post contains false statements of fact that damage your reputation — not just opinions or criticism — it may be defamatory. Like other U.S. platforms, Reddit is broadly shielded from liability for user content under Section 230, so it generally won’t adjudicate defamation claims itself. The realistic legal path is to pursue the person who posted it.
Because Reddit posts are usually anonymous, that often starts with legal process to identify the author, followed by a defamation claim. A court order finding the content unlawful can then be submitted to Google for de-indexing, and to Reddit to compel removal. This route takes time and typically requires an attorney, and success depends on the specific facts — but for genuinely defamatory content it can be the most decisive option.
Suppressing a Reddit thread you can’t remove
Most Reddit posts aren’t illegal and don’t break platform rules — they’re just unflattering. When deletion isn’t on the table, suppression is the practical answer. The goal isn’t to erase the thread; it’s to push it far enough down the results that searchers effectively never reach it. The vast majority of clicks go to the first page of Google, so moving a post from the top of page one to page three does most of the work.
Suppression means building and strengthening the results you want to rank — your website, professional profiles, positive press, and genuinely useful content — so they outrank the Reddit thread over time. It’s methodical rather than instant, but it’s durable, and it improves your entire search presence in the process. This is what it means to push down negative search results.
What not to do
- Don’t argue in the thread. Replying adds fresh activity and keywords that can push the post up Google’s results, and it often invites more attention.
- Don’t mass-report without a real violation. Reports that don’t map to an actual rule tend to be dismissed and can undermine a legitimate follow-up.
- Don’t assume it will disappear on its own. Reddit threads are sticky in search; ignoring one usually lets it settle in.
